The annual board meeting of Star Alliance, which was held in Beijing, has approved the proposal of Air India joining the alliance.

The membership in Star Alliance, which has been on the cards for long, will help the national carrier synergise with 18 member-airlines and provide access to 897 airports across 160 countries.

"Specialised teams of Air India, Star Alliance and its member-carriers will now be working on the integration process," a company spokesperson said.

Star Alliance networks more than 17,000 daily flights and members include Singapore Airlines, Thai Airlines, Lufthansa and Air Canada.
