Announcing the launch of the new service, Deepak Mehrotra, CEO of Bharti Televentures Karnataka, said: "The Airtel Group Call is a value added service to our customers who are keen on constantly communicating with family members and work groups."

The AGC currently covers the Karnataka circle, and will be rolled out nationally in a phased manner, he said.

Airtel customers will need to buy a 64k bit SIM card and any phase-II plus mobile handset to access the facility. AGC users will have the ability to see availability status of group members - akin to the popular instant messenger programmes.

The services are available to Airtel subscribers at a monthly rental of Rs 99. There is an initial charge of Rs 250 for customers to upgrade to the 64k bit SIM card. Group SMS will be charged at Rs 2.50.
