Amul does it again: GCMMF chairman faces no-confidence motion

Out of 17 directors of Federation, majority move no-confidence motion against Vipul Chaudhary

A major revolt is brewing at the country’s largest milk cooperative body, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF) as the majority of the directors have moved a no-confidence motion against the chairman Vipul Chaudhary.

Insiders revealed that out of 17 directors of district cooperative dairies in the state, 14 have moved the no-confidence motion against the chairman. “A requisition meeting of the directors will be convened on October 26 in this regard,” informed a source associated with GCMMF, which markets dairy products under the brand Amul. However, the reasons for the motion could not be known immediately.

When contacted, Chaudhary said, “I am not aware of any such thing.”

Notably, this is not the first instance of a no-confidence motion against a chairman at the GCMMF, which has also remained in news for its murky politics.

In 2010, then chairman Parthi Bhatol had to face a no-confidence motion from the majority of the directors. In 2006, the federation’s founder and the father of the white revolution in India, Dr Varghese Kurien himself had to face a no-confidence motion, thereby leading to his painful exit from the institution.

Chaudhary, who headed Mehsana-based Doodhsagar Dairy, was unanimously elected as chairman of GCMMF on August 18, 2012 replacing Bhatol. However, Bhatol, who headed Banas Dairy in Banaskantha district, had reportedly proposed Chaudhary’s name for the chairman’s post.
