Another accident at Bhushan Steel site, three hurt

Close on the heels of death of four workers in a fire mishap on Sunday, another accident occurred at the Bhushan Steel plant at Meramundali near here, injuring three contract labourers.

The injured workers have been identified as Pintu Pani (25), Madhu Senapati (26) and Girish Sahu (26), all belonging to Hindol in Dhenkanal district.

“The accident took place while an iron beam being lifted by crane collapsed. The three workers standing on the ground got injured,” said the inspector in charge of Bhushan police station Jitendra Sahu.

H S Mohanty, director of factories and boilers said, “A prohibition order has been issued on continuing work at the spot till a safe work procedure is formulated and submitted with the directorate for implementation.”

 

The accident occurred at the blast furnace site of Phase-II of the steel plant. All the contract workers were engaged by L&T.

Sources said, tension prevailed in and around the steel plant following the accident. Later, security personnel were deployed to defuse tension.

About 15,000 workers engaged in construction work have left the plant out of fear.

The state steel and mines minister, Rajnikant Singh has asked the Dhenkanal collector to investigate into the fire mishap at Bhushan Steel labour colony on Sunday and submit a report at the earliest.
