Global IT (information technology) services and consulting company Accenture has elevated one of its top executives in India to a senior role at the group level. Manish Sharma, a senior managing director for global delivery and solution development for Accenture Operations or BPO (business process outsourcing) unit, would take up a global role as group operating officer for Accenture Operations.

In this role, Mumbai-educated Sharma, 48, will be second-in-command at Accenture Operations, which is primarily the company’s business process outsourcing (BPO) business and one of the five business groups within the company. He will continue as a member of Accenture’s global leadership council. The changes were necessitated as Michael (Mike) J Salvino, the group chief executive for Accenture Operations is set to retire from the company and has decided to join Carrick Capital Partners, an investment firm focused on technology-enabled businesses. In order to fill the position, Accenture has elevated Debra A Polishook, presently group operating officer for Accenture Operations, to group chief executive for the division. All the changes will be effective from September 1, the company said. Sharma who holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s degree in operations management from Mumbai University, will continue to be based out of Bengaluru.

Presently, of Accenture’s five business groups, the technology services group is being headed by an India-born executive, Bhaskar Ghosh. Ghosh, who joined Accenture as a Lead of India Delivery Centre in 2003, was elevated to group chief executive of technology services in 2014. As a part of this role, Ghosh is also part of the company’s global management committee, which makes him the only Indian in this top decision-making body at the firm.
