The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) under Union ministry of personnel, public grievances and pension has recommended the name of Anshuman Das as the permanent chairman and managing director (CMD) of National Aluminium Company (Nalco).
PESB chose Das, director (commercial) cum acting CMD of Nalco, from 10 candidates who took the interview for the top post on Monday, two of whom were from Nalco. Besides Das, Nalco’s director (production) S S Mohapatra also appeared for interview.
Other candidates who were in the fray include Avijit Ghosh, director (mining) of Hindustan Copper Ltd, R Mohan Das, director (personnel & industrial relations)- Coal India Ltd (CIL), Manoranjan Dash, director, human resource development -Security Printing & Minting Corporation of India Ltd, R N Misra, director (civil)-Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd, Narendra Kothari, executive director- Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), T K Lahiry, CMD of Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (BCCL), K Harikumar, CMD of Hyderabad Industries Ltd and M N Kumar, Karnataka government official.

Nalco has been functioning without any full-time CMD since February 2011 after the then CMD A K Srivastava was arrested by the CBI on recovery of 10 kg of gold from his house. Then, B L Bagra, director (finance) took over as the acting CMD but he was also removed from the post in August 2012 following allegations of his involvement in the Rs 15 crore lime scam.
Das has been continuing as the acting CMD since August 2012.
