APGenco, the state owned power generation company, will sign a joint venture agreement with Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) in about two weeks to establish a 2,000Mw nuclear power generation unit in the state, said Union Minister of State for Commerce and Power Jairam Ramesh.
Addressing a press conference at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited today, he said Andhra Pradesh would be the first state to sign the agreement with NPCIL. The project is expected to cost Rs 15,000 crore and would take about three years for completion.
Ramesh, who reviewed the projects of APGenco, said it would add 20,000 Mw by 2015. Of that, projects relating to 4,500 Mw are ongoing, 3,000 Mw are under tendering while 8,000 Mw were under development.
The research and development wing of BHEL has developed a transformer using super conductivity material. It will pilot it shortly and is expected to reduce distribution losses by about 77 per cent. BHEL would have capacity of 4,400 MW by 2011, he said.
