Chennai-based cosmetic company Aravind Laboratories has set a target of Rs 32 crore turnover in the current year, up from Rs 24.50 crore in the year 2006-07.

By 2011-12, the company is eyeing Rs 150 crore turnover, R Rajagopal, managing partner, said.

Aravind manufactures a wide range of products that includes the popular Eyetex brand kajal, kum kum, nail polish, lipsticks, mascara, and nail glitter.

The company is a family-owned business with T Devanathan and Rajagopal as partners. It was set up in 1938. Kajal and kum kum still are the fast selling products of the company and account for over 60 per cent of the turnover.

A notable feature of Aravind is the mostly female-driven team. Of the total staff, there are 390 women employees and the guiding principle of the company is that the products produced for women 'should be manufactured by women'.

"By the year 2010, we expect the share of kajal and kum kum to be around Rs 50 crore and coloured cosmetics around Rs 100 crore in the total turnover," said Rajagopal.

On the expansion plans, he said the company would expand to Haryana, West Bengal, Bihar and the northeastern states during this year. It currently has a presence in 17 states with over 1 lakh outlets.

More new products too are in the offing including nail polish and lipsticks in various shades, talcum powder and fairness creams, Rajagopal said.

Aravind, which has a manufacturing facility spread over 50,000 sft at Ramapuram in Chennai, plans to set up another centre in the city at an outlay of Rs 4 crore.
