The Delhi Auto Expo 2016 on Wednesday kicked off with the unveiling of Vitara Brezza, a compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) from the country's largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki. This will be the first compact SUV from the market leader’s stable targeting a volume of 2 million units by 2020.

Vitara Brezza is developed with a special focus on the Indian customers, said T Suzuki, president and chief operating officer of Suzuki Motor Corporation, the Japanese parent company of Maruti Suzuki.  Falling under the sub-4-metre category, the vehicle will attract lower excise duty and is therefore expected to be competitively priced. The compact SUV has been conceptualised, designed and developed locally using a Suzuki global platform.

With a development cost of Rs 860 crore, the SUV will be commercially launched later this year.

Initially available only in diesel variant, the vehicle is likely to get a petrol engine as well in the future.

Kenichi Ayukawa, managing director and chief executive officer of Maruti said Vitara is Maruti's symbol of 'Create in India'.

Vitara Brezza meets the offset and side impact crash test norms that kicks in from October 2017. All variants will have a standard driver air bag, while the option of front passenger air bag comes with the base variant.

The SUV is likely to be positioned against the recently launched Mahindra TUV300 and Ford EcoSport.

Interestingly, Maruti has retained the name Vitara, from an older a SUV model which was imported as a completely built unit but had to be discontinued in India due to a low interest and pricing.
