Bajaj Auto planned two 125cc variants on the DTS-Si engine platform to back up its latest Platina 125cc model, with focus on style.
The Platina 125cc had the digital twin spark-swirl induction (DTS-Si) engine that gave the company nearly 50 per cent market share in the segment
One variant on the same platform in six months would be targeted at the mass end of the market but designed stylishly, said Amit Nandi, general manager for marketing at Bajaj Auto.
Bajaj had increased its market share in 125cc bike segment to above 50 per cent at a time when motorbike sales rose 11 per cent in the first quarter of FY09, 100cc bike sales rose 9 per cent and 125cc sales surged 14 per cent.
The 125cc motorcycle segment now constituted around 36 per cent of sales against just 6 per cent eight years back.
"The future is in the 125cc bike segment, offering the best mileage across categories at 111 kilometer to a litre", Nandi said. Bajaj Auto sold 180,000 units per month combining all models during last year, but this year growth had been flat till date. "Around 30 per cent of annual sales happened in the three festive months", Nandi claimed.
Bajaj XCD 125cc was selling on average 28,000 units per month.
