Its a triple treat for the Priyanka Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Barfi!. The film has not only entered the Rs 100-crore club, it is also India's official entry for the Oscars. And, on top of it, Barfi! is now the second-biggest international grosser of this year, just below Salman Khan's Ek Tha Tiger. For Kapoor, this is the biggest hit of all time in India and the overseas market, as far as net collection goes.
In the international markets, it has raced ahead of collections of Agneepath, Housefull 2 and Cocktail.
Both Kapoor and Chopra had aggressively promoted the film in markets like London and Dubai. The audience response to these initiatives was a good enough early indicator of the anticipation around Barfi!.
“Barfi! is now the second highest grossing Hindi film in the overseas market in 2012, next only to Ek Tha Tiger After a superb opening weekend, the film has sustained its run in cinemas better than any other movie this year across all major markets like the US, UK, Middle East and Australia. There are few movies which have the ability to reach out and appeal to audiences of all sorts globally and Barfi! has that unique and universal appeal,” said Amrita Pandey, Executive Director - Syndication, International Distribution & Disney Media Distribution, Studios, Disney UTV.
Barfi! was produced on a budget of Rs 30 crore and from the domestic box-office it has collected over Rs 105 crore.
“Many films this year crossed the Rs 100 crore mark on box-office, but very few are there which made profit. Barfi! is one of those,” said independent trade analyst Vinod Mirani. Directed by Anurag Basu, the film is produced by UTV Motion Pictures.
