BEML bags Delhi Metro order

BEML Limited, the defence ministry undertaking manufacturing metro rail cars, earthmoving equipment among others, has received an order for Rs 925 crore from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (DMRCL) for the supply of 136 intermediate metro cars.

Intermediate cars are designed and developed by the R&D wing of the BEML to upgrade the passenger carrying capacity of the existing Metro cars of DMRCL. These intermediate cars have undergone various technical tests of DMRCL and came out successfully. On execution of the above order which shall commence in September 2012 and complete by December 2013, the existing four-car train sets of Delhi Metro at its Phase-I will get converted to 6-car train sets, the company said in a statement.

 

BEML is the supplier of metro cars to the Delhi Metro Phase-I and also to its RS-4 (rolling stock) Project by manufacturing and supplying the country’s first standard gauge metro cars. Besides DMRCL, BEML is the supplier of metro train cars to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL). It has an order for the supply of 150 metro cars for BMRCL valued at Rs 1,672.5 crore. The construction will start in June. The BMRCL has already imported 6 metro cars through its technical partner, Rotem of Korea.

Apart from the broad gauge and standard gauge metro cars, BEML has also designed and developed low cost metro cars suiting the tier-II cities of the country. With the development of the intermediate metro cars, BEML has joined the select companies in the world to manufacture such equipment.
