Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), a unit of Steel Authority of India (SAIL), has achieved impressive performance in its major production centres during May, 2010.
Sinter output at 2,85,946 tonnes, Hot Metal production at 1,88,135 tonnes and Crude Steel at 1,73,141 tonnes were the best May production in any year since the inception of the plant.
Simultaneously Saleable Steel production reached 1,55,574 tonnes. These production centres recorded growths of 17 percent, 12 percent, 11 percent and 10 percent respectively compared to the corresponding May figures of 2009.
Supported by this growth, the steel plant achieved all time best April-May performance since inception. During these two months, RSP produced 5,75,998 tonnes of Sinter, 3,80,246 tonnes of Hot Metal and 3,51,922 tonnes of Crude Steel. Similarly, Saleable Steel output during the period reached 3,14,704 tonnes. All these units operated well over rated capacity.
The finishing units of RSP also performed with distinction during the first two months of the current fiscal registering growth over the corresponding period of last fiscal. These included Plates from Plate Mill at 79,597 tonnes (12.6%); Hot Rolled Coils at 1,11,409 tonnes (15.5%); Hot Rolled Plates at 47,345 tonnes (1.2%), Electric Resistance Weld (ERW) Pipes at 8,986 tonnes (175%); Spiral Weld (SW) Pipes at 6,346 tonnes (26.4%), Galvanised Sheets at 26,380 tonnes (9.5%) and Cold Rolled Sheets/ Coils at 21,267 tonnes (5.4%).
The steel plant dispatched 3,09,416 tonnes of steel during this period which is claimed to be all time best for any April-May months.
RSP, according to a company release, is laying thrust on improving its profitability by increasing production volumes through maximization of capacity utilization. It has also realigned its production lines in tune with the market demand.
