The Ramachandrapuram unit of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) posted a turnover of Rs 2,635 crore and a profit before tax of Rs 609 crore during 2005-06.

The public sector undertaking's turnover increased by 51 per cent and profit grew by 90 per cent when compared to the previous year's turnover and profit of Rs 1,747 crore and Rs 320 crore respectively.

"Last year, we achieved our dream target of crossing the Rs 2,000-crore mark in turnover," unit's executive director, Chandra Pratap Singh, said, adding that the unit had also registered the highest year-on-year growth rate.

Singh told mediapersons that the company's exports also registered an eleven-fold increase from Rs 23 crore in 2004-05 to Rs 260 crore in 2005-06.

With the receipt of major orders from Oman and Sudan, the company was expecting to double its exports to Rs 567 crore in the current financial year.

He said the company, which had already embarked upon a Rs 172-crore capacity building programme, was planning to invest an additional Rs 200 crore to augment its facilities.

As the country was moving towards super critical thermal power stations of 800 Mw and above, the unit was also gearing up to meet this market by having strategic tie-ups with leading multinational companies for in-house manufacturing of pumps, heat exchangers and pulverisers.

Stating that the large gas finds in the Krishna-Godavari basin and other parts of the country would lead to the establishment of mega gas-based power projects, Singh said the unit was constructing a new block for testing of Fr-9FA advanced gas turbine of 255 Mw capacity.

In this context, he pointed out that 30-35 new gas-based projects have been identified by NTPC, ONGC, Reliance, GESCL, PPCL, Lanco and APGenco.
