Power Sector Southern Region (PSSR), a unit of state-run Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), will more than double its investment in 2009-10 for purchasing high-capacity cranes and heating equipment.

Stating that the power sector was the only sector which has no impact of the economic meltdown, BHEL PSSR Executive Director P R Shriram said high-capacity cranes and heating equipment would be imported.

The company invested Rs 40 crore in 2008-09 and would invest about Rs 90 crore this fiscal, Shriram told reporters here last night.

BHEL PSSR, currently in the process of increasing its manufacturing capacity, would produce 20,000 MW of power by 2011, he said adding that it would also increase their capacity to the grid by adding 4,500 MW. It would include the 885-MW commissioned during 2008-09, he said.

He said the "raising cost of inputs" and the wage revision had made a marginal impact on its financial performance. The company reported a profit before tax of Rs 96 crore in 2007-08 while in 2008-09 it stood at Rs 70 crore, he added.

BHEL PSSR registered a turnover of Rs 1,000 crore during 2008-09, he said.

Shriram said the company is executing various projects with a total capacity of 15,557 MW across the country in 2009-10 alone.

On their projects in Tamil Nadu, he said they were doing six projects with a total capacity 6,240 MW.

Stating that PSSR was the first unit in BHEL to implement SAP-HR module, he said, they would be adding 160 trainees this year.
