Bharat Heavy Electricals(BHEL) is planning to set up a 400 MW power plant on the integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) technology as part of efforts to commercialise eco-friendly projects.

"We are preparing a blueprint for a 400 MW IGCC plant that would be run on commercial basis," A K Puri, chairman and MD of BHEL, told PTI.

"We have also submitted a feasibility report, and are awaiting approvals for a 125 MW IGCC project," he added.

BHEL will set up the 125 MW unit in association with NTPC.

The IGCC technology converts coal into gas, which is fed into gas turbines for generating electricity.

The 125 MW project will be set up near NTPC's Auraiya gas-fired power plant in Uttar Pradesh and would require about Rs 900 crore. While BHEL will commission the project, NTPC would own and operate it.
