Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), the flagship entity of the Steel Authority of India (SAIL), has bagged a major contract for supplying steel products to the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).
The product would be used in the nuclear programme of the Centre. SAIL officials, however, did not reveal the details of the project in which the products would be used. The officials associated with the central marketing organisation confirmed the deal.
According to the officials, SAIL-BSP would be supplying 64,000 tonnes of steel to BARC. The plant had produced over 4,000 tonnes of special grade steel that was demanded by the Centre. As of now, the agency executing the project in BARC has lifted 1500 tonnes, the officials said, adding that the remaining stock would be procured after getting quality feedback.
The use of SAIL-BSP steel in the nuclear programme was in line with the Make-in-India concept. The company has in the past few years been supplying TMT bars and special steel plates for the indigenously-made nuclear plant at Rawatbhata in Rajasthan, run by the Nuclear Power Corporation (NPCL).
BSP is also rolling out special steel for the power sector, besides continuing to meet requirement of structural steel for major customers and for National Thermal Power Corporation’s thermal power installations. The plant had also supplied the required grade of structural steel for the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.
The officials said the SAIL-BSP has progressively improved rolling standards and equipped both the rail and structural mill, besides plate mill in Bhilai with advanced and modern facilities. Two other mills at BSP that include the Wire Rod Mill (WRM) and Merchant Mill (MM) have improvised operations and introduced process improvements.
