Big-ticket firms in fray for 'SHE' award

Ashok Leyland Limited, Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited, Wipro Technologies, Saint Gobain Glass India Limited and Shasun Chemicals and Drugs Limited are among the 40 companies that are vying for the CII-Southern Region's 'Leadership and Excellence in Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Award 2004'.
 
According to a press release, companies which have excelled in safety, environment and health practices will present innovative concepts and case studies on SHE at the competition scheduled be held on February 24 and 25 in Chennai.
 
"There is a growing awareness about environmental problems and increased commitment to protect the vital resources. To encourage more sustainable development in future, this competition ensures and appreciates improved patterns of consumption and environmental behaviour," said Pradeep Dhobale, chairman (energy and environment sub-committee), CII-Southern Region.
 
Keeping in mind the integration of environmental issues in the economic and social development challenges currently and prospectively, CII-Southern region had instituted the leadership and excellence award in SHE during 2002.
 
The award aims at recognising and motivating the corporate that has adopted innovative practices in SHE. This is the third edition of the award which is open to factories in the southern region.
 
There are three leadership awards for the manufacturing category, one leadership award for the service category, and one innovation award as a special category.
 
The award has been instituted to acknowledge extraordinary contribution by organisations towards good working practices that create an injury-free work place, conserve critical environmental resource, contribute to sustainable development, handle occupational health and hygiene issues, and excellent, innovative and environment management practices.
