Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, independent director at Infosys and chairman and managing director of Biocon, on Wednesday apologised for her tweet praising a presentation by Infosys Chairman N R Narayana Murthy’s son Rohan Murty at a recent board meeting.
“I apologise for this inadvertent and improper tweet on Rohan Murty; I agree it was incorrect to do so,” she said in a Twitter post on Wednesday, following a few proxy advisory firms criticising her move to share the proceedings of a board meeting on social media.
Twitter users, who had criticised Mazumdar-Shaw’s earlier tweet, congratulated her for the apology. “Only an honest person, one of high integrity has the courage to apologise and accepts her faults. Hats off to you!!” tweeted a follower.

Earlier, Mazumdar-Shaw, an independent director of Infosys and a member of the company’s nominations committee, had showered praise on the 31-year-old Rohan Murty. “At a recent Infy board meeting, I was most impressed by Rohan Murty’s brilliant tech-loaded presentation, which will enormously benefit Infy,” she had tweeted on Saturday, referring to Murty’s presentation to the company board on initiatives being taken by the chairman’s office and their success so far.
When contacted, another Infosys director had raised concern over her act, saying board proceedings should not have been taken to social media. “I will certainly take this up with the chairman,” the director had said, on condition of anonymity.
“The board can ask anyone to make a presentation; so, let’s put that out of our way. As far as Mazumdar-Shaw is concerned, she should not have done this. What happens in the boardroom should stay in the boardroom. Going to social media with such information is a little excessive,” Amit Tandon, founder and managing director of Institutional Investors Advisory Services, had said.
Rohan Murty’s appointment at Infosys has been widely criticised, as many felt Narayana Murthy had gone back on his words; earlier, Murthy had said children of the company’s co-founders would never become its part.
