Birla Cellulosic bags Demings quality award

The Bharuch-based Birla Cellulosic, a unit of Grasim Industries Ltd, became the first company in Gujarat to receive the Deming's Quality Control Award.

 
The company has received the award for distinctive performance improvements through the application of total quality management (TQM), the company said.

 
The Deming's Quality Control Award is an internationally recognised symbol of excellence on TQM in the world, the company said. Birla Cellulosic is the fifth company in the country to receive the award.

 
The award is presented to the company for TQM, which is a systematic activity carried out by the entire organisation to effectively achieve company objectives so as to provide products and services with a level of quality that satisfies customers, at the appropriate time and price, the company said.

 
The award has been given for the company's plant at Kosamba in Bharuch district. In July 2003, the company applied for the award. Inspections were carried out in September.

 
Hiroshi Okuda, chairman, Deming Prize Committee, and Masami Mita, secretary, Deming Prize Committee, Tokyo, has declared Birla Cellulosic as a winner of Deming Quality Control Award for operations and business units 2003.

 
Vijay Kaul, senior executive president, Birla Cellulose received the award on behalf of the company in Tokyo on November 11, the company said.
