According to sources, many stores in malls had to down shutters as they could not control the crowd. A mall in the Kurla area even had to call in the police to control the crowd.
Department stores such as Shoppers Stop, Lifestyle, Pantaloons and brands such as Vero Moda, Jack & Jones, Only and Levis had offered came out with a flat 50 per cent discount over the weekend. Malls, too, had come out with a flat 50 per cent discount during the weekdays.
“We clocked the highest car count in the history of our mall on July 11 and for the past three Sundays, the footfalls have been 85,000,” said Aman Fakih, chief executive officer of Runwal Malls.
The normal footfall at Runwal group’s R City mall in the Ghatkopar area of is 50,000-55,000 on Sundays.
Fakih said footfalls and sales went up 25-30 per cent when the mall announced here a 50 per cent discount.
Nirzar Jain, vice-president of Oberoi Mall in the Goregaon area, said his mall saw sales grow 40 per cent last Wednesday when the mall announced a flat 50 per cent discount.
Jain says the July 18 weekend went well thanks to the release of new movies coupled with the Eid festival.
“Large brands went up at least 20 per cent compared to the same period last year,” Jain added.
