The Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) has taken up yet another critical job under its expansion and modernization plan in the fast upcoming Blast Furnace No 8 (BF 8) Project with the inauguration of the job of layering of refractory castable of furnace bottom in Furnace Proper area.

A statement issued by the company here said that the total volume of refractory material that would be used for layering jobs in furnace proper area is around 3500 Tonnes. This includes refractory castable, carbon blocks, refractory bricks, graniting material etc. Refractory castable material would be used for purpose of layering in furnace bottom plate area that is being taken up first. Different compositions would be used at different heights of the furnace proper structure from under-hearth area to furnace top.

The total refractory requirement for BF 8 would be of 23,166 T including 2100 T of imported material. Beside furnace proper structure, refractory material would be used in cast house, hot stove, bustle pipe and hot blast duct.

BF 8 is being installed in Bhilai Steel Plant as part of its 7 Million Tonne modernisation and expansion programme. It may be recalled that the erection activity of furnace shell of the new blast furnace was inaugurated in February 2012. The Furnace shell that stands 45 metre tall consists of 23 special steel rings of thickness varying from 40 to 120 mm. It is worth mentioning that five numbers of shell rings were placed at a time on June 28, 2012.

The placement of 5 rings together has been done for the first time. The five shell rings weighing about 110 Tonne were lifted with the help of a 600 T of Demag Crane.
