Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), the flagship entity of the Steel Authority of India (SAIL), has beaten the peak summer and fought the tough climatic conditions to record the best April-May performances in almost all major areas of production.
The peak summer month of May saw temperatures in Bhilai shooting up to 45 degree and above. Another constraint normally faced in the summer months is the lower attendance mainly on account of marriage season and also some employees choosing to take their families out on vacation during the school holidays.
Overcoming such constraints of manpower and difficult climate conditions, BSP has in both the summer months of April and May 2010, recorded its best May production of BF coke, sinter, hot metal, crude steel, plates, saleable steel as also loading and dispatch of saleable steel.
Official sources said that the Coke Ovens finished April-May with best-ever average equivalent oven pushing rate of 776 ovens per day for the month against previous best May of 746.4. Production of 2,67,753 Tonne (T) of Blast Furnace coke was the best for any May month since its inception.
The Sinter Plants had recorded production of 13,56,188 T of sinter while the Blast Furnaces recorded Hot Metal production of 9,39,315 T that had been highest during previous corresponding periods. The two steel melting shops too had registered its best-ever performances.
The Plant has recorded its best ever crude steel production of 8,85,851 T. Among the Plant's finishing mills, the Plate Mill recorded its best April-May production of 2,13,200 T of Finished Plates. Sources said that the plant ended May 2010 with best-May Saleable Steel production of 3,80,838 T. Saleable Steel Loading and Dispatch figures of 3,82,005 and 3,82,271T, respectively, were also the best for any May month since inception.
