The Ahmedabad-based drug maker Cadila Pharmaceuticals on Monday said its Ethiopian joint venture has become the first pharmaceutical company to bag the current Good Manufacturing Practises (cGMP) certificate.

The Cadila Pharmaceuticals Ethiopia Plc (CPEL), a joint venture with the Almeta Impex Plc, has thus become the first pharmaceutical formulation manufacturing company in Ethiopia to comply with cGMP norm laid down by the World Health Organisation (WHO), a company statement said.

Commissioned in 2007, the CPEL plant has a capacity to manufacture 390 million tablets, 165 million capsules and 1.44 million litres liquid per annum, it said.

According to the statement, the Minister of Industry of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Ato Mekonnen Manyazewak, presented the cGMP certificate to CPEL executives in a ceremony held at its premises at Oromia in Gelan Town.
