A cargo vessel carrying soda ash consignment from Veraval Port to Calicut capsized after travelling 60 nautical miles into the Arabian sea between Jafrabad and Diu here today, Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) officials said.

All the 11 crew members on board 'Indramani' escaped unhurt in a safety boat this morning when the cargo ship started sinking after being caught in rough weather which had resulted due to cyclonic storm 'Phyan' in the Arabian sea, they said.

"The crew members who escaped in the safety boat were spotted by some fishermen who brought them back to Veraval," they said.

The officials said the consignment belonged to a Gujarat- based chemical company which was being shipped to Calicut in Kerala. The company authorities are assessing the damages and would be filing a detailed report with the GMB soon, GMB officials said.

Meanwhile, 'Phyan' resulted in sporadic overnight rains in some parts of South Gujarat and Saurashtra as it had fizzled out yesterday.
