The US-based private equity giant Carlyle Group has hired Neeraj Bharadwaj as managing director of its India investment team.

Bharadwaj is former India head of another PE major Apax Partners.

Carlyle, which has about $159 billion in assets under management globally, has invested $800 million in India so far, including investments in Housing Development Finance Corporation, Edelweiss Financial Services and India Infoline.

Bharadwaj joins from Accel Partners where he was managing director of growth investing operation in India.

Before coming into India, he was a partner with Apax in the US, with a focus on the technology segment. Prior to Apax, he’d worked with McKinsey & Co, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley.

Currently, Carlyle has two MDs in its India office in Mumbai, Shankar Narayanan (Asia Growth Fund) and Devinjit Singh (Asia Buyout Fund), former mergers and acquisitions head of Citi India. Carlyle had seen the exit of MD and India head of its buyout fund, Rajeev Gupta, in January 2011.
