Chennai Corporation to add 40 low-cost canteens

The Chennai Corporation has decided to increase the number of low-cost canteens by another 40 from its earlier plan of setting up 15 canteens across the city.

According to an official release, another 40 more canteens would be opened in various parts of the city including Kathivakkam High Road, Thrivuottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Vysarpadi, Korukkupet, Old Washermenpet, and Beach Road.

The centres are targeted at people who comes the under lower economic sections with a motto of providing 'hygienic and quality food' at a low cost. They would serve idlis at Re 1 per piece, sambar rice at Rs 5 per plate and curd rice at Rs 3 per plate.
 

The decision to set up these centres was announced by the state government in January. The first canteen was inaugurated on February 24.

The state government had earlier ordered to allocate 500 tonne rice to the Chennai Corporation for use in these centres.

The canteens are being run by women self-help groups. The women, most of them illiterate, have been trained to manage, cook and clean the canteens, the release stated here on Tuesday.
