Chennai Express, DID help Zee zoom past Star Plus in weekly ratings

Star Plus to find itself on second spot of weekly GEC ratings list for the first time in 39 weeks

For the first time in 39 weeks, Star Plus (the general entertaiment channel from Star India) find itself on the second spot of the weekly GEC ratings list. It has been outdone by Zee Tv's strong weekend line up including the premier of this year's blockbuster movie Chennai Express and the launch of the fourth season of it's flagship reality show Dance India Dance.

With Chennai Express garnering a viewership of 19.5 million and DID 4's launch episode on Saturday, October 26 getting in viewership of 6.08 million, Zee's weekend viewership reached 169 million in week 43 (20 October to 26 October 2013). In comparison, Star Pus raked in a mere 33.64 million viewers. The glaring difference between the two channels' viewership over the weekend more than made up for Zee's lag during the weekdays.

This also marks the highest rated movie premier since July 2010. The record was held by the premier of Salman Khan and KAreena Kapoor starrer Bodyguard (November 2011) which raked in viewership of 14.77 million.

This helped Zee reached gross viewership of 505.44 million for the week while Star Plus' viewership stood at 492.85 million.

In the weekday prime time slot, Star Plus led the chart with viewership of 259.37 million, a growth of 6.17 million viewers as opposed to Zee's degrowth in the segment by 9.19 million viewers (Week 43: viewership 186.1 million; week 42: viewership 195.29 million).

The launch episode of DID 4 also managed to dethrone Colors' comedy talk show Comedy Nights with Kapil as the top rated weekend property in the prime time.

Star Plus has in the past agreed that it needs to beef up its weekend programming since it can not rely only on weekday shows to maintain its position as numero uno in the ratings chart. The channel hopes that the launch of its dance reality show Nach Baliye 6 will help gets the weekend ratings on track. The show launches on 9 November.

During the weekdays, Star Plus' Diya Aur Bati Hum continued to lead the ratings with viewership of 10.3 million, followed by Zee's historical drama Jodha Akbar with viewership of 8.3 million.
