China big source of Net attacks, says Symantec

 Specifically, 5.4 per cent of the attacks were launched from China. Symantec is the world leader in Internet security.

 On the other hand, India was ranked 24th in terms of overall volume of attack activity over the past six months, accounting for approximately 0.5 per cent of the attacks.

 In term of attacks per Internet capita, India was ranked 31st among 42 countries with more than 1 million Internet users, recording 32 attacks per 10,000 Internet users.

 Australia was the 14th highest source of attack activity over the past six months, constituting 1.1 per cent of all attacks.

 In terms of attacks per Internet capita, Australia was ranked 28th among 42 countries with more than 1 million Internet users, with 37 recorded attacks per 10,000 Internet users.

 South Korea was the 4th highest source of attack activity over the past six months. Specifically, 4.2 per cent of all attacks were launched from systems located in South Korea.

 In term of attacks per Internet capita, South Korea was the 14th highest attacking country among 42 countries with more than 1 million Internet users, recording 64 attacks per 10,000 Internet users.

 This report includes analysis of data from Symantec Managed Security Services customers as well as more than 20,000 DeepSight Threat Management System registered sensors worldwide monitoring attack activity in more than 180 countries.

 The report covers network-based attacks, a review of vulnerabilities discovered and exploited, and highlights of malicious code trends.

 With the release of the current report, Symantec provides analysis of attacker vulnerability preferences for the first time.

 This new analysis shows that 64 per cent of all new attacks targeted vulnerabilities less than one year old.

 Additionally, 66 per cent of all attacks documented in the first half of 2003 utilised vulnerabilities categorised.
