CMRI expert to probe Anant coal mine fire

V K Singh, a top mining expert of the Dhanbad-based Central Mining Research Institute will visit Talcher Coalfields soon to study the causes of the land slide and subsequent fire at the Anant open cast coal mine.

The expert will also suggest preventive measures.

Addressing reporters here, Debasish Sengupta, deputy director general of mine safety said, the CMRI mining expert will visit the Talcher Coalfields soon to probe the cause of fire at the Anant mine. Sengupa did not hold anyone responsible for the fire, stating that coal has spontaneous heating nature. Sengupta who conducted an inspection at the Anant and Bharatpur open cast coal mines on Wednesday was accompanied by a team of officials of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) and trade union leaders.

 

The team visited the fire site at Bharatpur mine where the conveyor belt of the rapid loading system of National Aluminium Company (Nalco) was damaged by the fire at the mine on December 29. Sengupta suggested the installation of a close circuit camera at the system to help ascertain the cause of any such mishap in the future.
