Coal India (CIL) plans to scout for coal blocks abroad jointly with Steel Authority of India (SAIL) and Rastriya Ispat Nigam (RINL).

"We are currently holding talks with SAIL and RINL to form a consortium to bid for coal mines in countries like Canada, Australia, South Africa and Argentina," Partha Bhattacharya, chairman, CIL, said.

CIL will bid through its subsidiary Coal Videsh, which has been specially created for the purpose. The company will mainly scout for coking coal blocks, which are in short supply in India.
