"We at Reliance have changed equation in every area be it textiles or telecommunications. When everybody said nylon was the fabric for the future, we said it was polyester. We never ever pioneered in technology as we simply did not have the R&D facility but we innovated," Ambani said here at the Crisil Young Thought Leader 2003 awards.

While addressing the gathering, he pondered on his father late Dhirubhai Ambani's vision and leadership qualities.

"Dhirubhai Ambani's skills were simply his ability to dream with his eyes open. He would say that I do not take a risk of closing them as the dreams would then turn into a nightmare," Ambani said.

Crisil announced 11 Crisil Young Thought Leader awards for 2003. The winners of the award were three students from IIM Calcutta, two from IIM Bangalore, one each from NMIMS, Mumbai, FMS, Delhi, IMT, Ghaziabad and IIM Kozhikode.

Dr Bakul Dholakia, director, Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad gave awards to the Young Thought Leaders. Ravi Mohan, chief executive officer of Crisil, presided over the function.
