DaimlerChrysler entered the Indian commercial vehicles segment today with the launch of Actros, a medium-heavy duty truck, meant mainly for mining operations.

Actros, available in two versions; 4040K and 4840K, is designed to cater to the needs of high-tonnage special applications, especially in the mining industry, Wilfried Albur, CEO & MD, DaimlerChrysler India (DCIL), said.

The 4040K is a three-axle truck and will be priced at Rs 55 lakh and the 4840K, a four-axle one, will be sold at Rs 65 lakh, Albur said. Claiming that the Actros engine is the most powerful in the tipper segment, Albur said it will set new benchamark in fuel efficiency and maintenance costs. The truck has a number of features that adds to the safety and comfort of the driver, keeping him free to concentrate on the task on hand.

Albur said the Indian market for the tipper segment is estimated roughly at 800 units per year at present and the increasing activity in infrastructure activity will see this number rise over the next few years. Bus and truck maker Volvo have already launched trucks in this segment and Tata Motors have also made an entry with their Novo.

The trucks will be imported into India as complete built units and marketing and service will be the responsibility of DaimlerChrysler India. The company will follow the direct selling route to sell these trucks although the dealers of the car segment may be involved in the servicing part, Albur said.
