Dredging Corporation of India Ltd has received approval for purchasing three dredgers worth Rs 1,722 crore from the Public Investment Board.
"Yesterday, PIB approved the proposal for buying three trailer suction dredgers that will entail an investment of Rs 1,722 crore," Ministry of Shipping, Roads and Transport Joint Secretary Rakesh Srivastava said.
"The proposal will be forwarded to the Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure for approval," he said.
Srivastava said the government desired at least one dredger to be built in any Indian shipyard with technology transfer from an international company.
"IHC Holland has been selected for the three dredgers. But, if the company does not agree for technology transfer to any Indian shipyard then we will order only 2 from them," Srivastava said.
DCI has 12 dredgers of which some were 30 years. In the 11th plan period, over 600 million cubic metres of dredging was targeted in all ports.
