When most corporate houses are laying off workers, Dohle Danautic India Pvt Ltd has decided to hire for its crew.
Doehle Danautic India Pvt Ltd offers crew management/ship management services to clients worldwide for various types of vessels such as containers, bulk carriers, oil tankers, gas carriers, chemical tankers, multipurpose vessels, offshore support vessels and DP vessels.
The company will replace employees from East European countries and the Philippines with Indian crew members.
The company handles 95 ships and each ship has a crew of about 20 members.
Only 5 per cent of the existing staff is from India, and it should reach 50 per cent in the near future, Managing Director Daniel Chopra said.
Talking to the media in Chandigarh, Chopra said that this could be a cost-cutting measure for the company in the wake of the global financial crisis. Talking about the impact of the present market scenario on private shipping players, he said players in this industry had earned fat margins during the Olympics in China and overall boom in the world economy in the past three years.
He added they planned to launch their flagship training institute in Chandigarh by early next year. "We are waiting for the US elections and tax reforms likely to be introduced in China," he said. To begin with, a one-year course costing about Rs 60,000 would be introduced for seamen, Chopra said.
Chopra said merchant navy was a very lucrative vocation for young aspirants but young boys in the hinterland of India did not have access to the information about the scope of this profession.
So they plan to disseminate information through advertising in vernacular media to inform the boys at the grassroots level that they can earn substantial income in a small timeframe and accumulate wealth to set up a business in their own town for the rest of their life.
