Domestic air traffic grew 9.7% in 2014

IndiGo main beneficiary of SpiceJet trouble, December share rises to 36.1%

Growth is back in Indian aviation. Fuelled by a slew of discount offers Indian carriers flew 67.3 million passengers in 2014 which is a growth of 9.7% over 2013.

The growth in 2014 was led by private airlines which flew 54.9 million passengers (10.9% growth over 2013) while Air India flew 12.4 million passengers in 2014 (4.3% growth over 2013)

In 2013  domestic air traffic had grown at a modest 4.4% over 2012. In 2013 airlines carried 61.4 million passengers while the year  2012 had seen passenger number decline over 2011.

In December 2014 airlines flew 6.4 million passengers a rise of 15% over December 2013 figure (5.5 million).  
 

The country's largest domestic airline IndiGo was the biggest beneficiary of SpiceJet crisis and IndiGo recorded a market share of 36.1% in December (up from 33.5 in November) while SpiceJet's share plunged to 10.4% in December from 14.9% in the previous month.

Jet Airways remained the number two airline with a market share of 21.7% and also reported the highest loads of 89% in December. Air India was ranked third with 18.6% share and GoAir reported market share of 9.3% in December.

IndiGo also had the best on time performance of 77.1% at four metro airports while Air India's punctuality record of 59.8% was the lowest amongst peers.
