Private power utility DPSC Ltd, which had snapped power supply to Eastern Coalfields (ECL) due to non-payment of Rs 63 crore as bank guarantee, today said it had begun restoring the power connection.

The decision follows Calcutta High Court's observation that while power supply should be restored, ECL should look into bank guarantee, DSPC President Somesh Dasgupta said.

He added, "We have begun the process of resuming power supply, but it will take time."

Coal extraction in at least nine mines of the Eastern Coalfields came to a stand still after power supply was snapped by DPSC Ltd for non-payment of Rs 63 crore as bank guarantee.

Dasgupta pointed out that as ECL has discontinued coal supply to it for the last two months, the company was unable to generate power at its two units near here.

"Hence, we don't think that power supply can become normal immediately, despite reconnection," he explained.

Technical Secretary to ECL chairman Niladri Roy had said yesterday that power supply to the mines had not returned to normal despite the court's observation.
