Dr Reddy's laboratories Limited had initiated a voluntary recall of Paricalcitol capsules of different dosages in the US market in November last year owing to the reports of breakage of capsules.

This is a Class III recall, defined as a situation in which use or exposure to a violative product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences. The details of Dr Reddy's voluntary action were put out on the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) website.

About 24,661 bottles containing 30 capsules each of various dosages were being recalled by the company, according to the information available on the USFDA website.

Paricalcitol is used for preventing and treating high levels of parathyroid hormone in certain patients with chronic kidney disease. The drug is a vitamin D compound and it works by blocking the formation and release of parathyroid hormone, according to the publicly available information.
