Indian drug makers have increased production of the only available medicine against Swine Flu, Oseltamivir, better known as Tamiflu, after the government said it would buy 20 million doses of the drug.

Ranbaxy Laboratories, Strides Arcolab and Cipla are raising production of Oseltamivir, a generic version of the patented drug Tamiflu, from multinational Roche's portfolio.

Ranbaxy President Ramesh Adige said, "If required, Ranbaxy can provide close to a million capsules in the next few weeks to the Indian market."

"We have so far supplied Oseltamivir to Malaysia, Oman and a country in Africa. We stand ready to supply Oseltamivir, to meet urgent requirements of countries, to tide over the crisis emerging from outbreak of swine flu,” he added.

Earlier, Cipla had announced that it was increasing the inventory to 2.5 million doses from the 1 million doses of Oseltamivir capsules.
