An Indian PSU and a European defence conglomerate are in the process of jointly developing a missile warning system, primarily to protect IAF aircraft.

The European Aviation and Defence Systems (EADS) has supplied 24 of a total of 36 sensors for integration and further development by India's Defence Avionics Research Establishment (DARE), Bernhard Gerwert, CEO, EADS Defence Electronics, said on the sidelines of the Aero India show here.

EADS and DARE, which last year signed a strategic cooperation agreement, will jointly develop the missile warning system based on a sensor called MILDS AN/AAR-60. The system would be integrated into the existing multi-sensor warning network of India's armed forces.

Observing that the EADS-DARE pact was "making good progress", Gerwert said EADS was to have delivered 36 sensors for integration and further development as part of the accord.

"By now, 24 sensors have been delivered and the first integration tests in DARE's multi-sensor self-protection suite have been conducted successfully," he said.

The MILDS sensor is an passive imaging sensor that detects and tracks ultra-violet emissions of approaching missiles, including those like shoulder-launched missiles. It provides ample time to enable the automatic deployment of counter measures like flares and chaff.

Gerwert said the sensor has already proven itself by being deployed in a large number of aircraft, incuding rotary wing and wide-bodied ones. A version for fighter aircraft is currently under development, he said.
