Faced with competition from new shopping malls, Ebony Retail Holdings Ltd is planning a training programme for its entire staff.

A custom-made training capsule is being designed for each of the eight Ebony stores across Delhi and Punjab.

The kind of training imparted will depend on the needs of that particular store. Each capsule is likely to cover about 20 people. The company plans to spend about 10 per cent of the salary bill on this programme.

The company planned to train each person for an average of six days a year, Rakesh Malhotra, chief operating officer, Ebony Retail Holdings, said.

While business managers and the top management will be given lessons on change management, organisational development and leadership, brand management and problem solving skills, the merchandisers will be trained in negotiating skills and merchandising systems and processes.

The cashiers and billing assistants will be trained in extending good customer service.

Even the incentive policy is being changed. Now, instead of individual performance, incentives will depend on team performance. Business managers will also be part of the incentive structure unlike earlier.
