Consumer electronic goods, particularly mobile and smartphones, are driving the growth of Amazon India in Assam, which the company terms as a “fast growing market”. The e-retailer, which is a subsidiary of world’s largest e-commerce company – Amazon.com, has been witnessing a 160% year-on-year growth in revenue in the state.
The state contributes to around 5% of total revenue for Amazon in India, which according to the company is “very high share”. “With the penetration of internet still low in this part of the country, a 5% share is very high. The growth trajectory we are seeing in Assam is on a steady rise. We have found that consumers here want good quality branded products,” said Noor Patel, director (category management) of Amazon India.
The y-o-y growth of 160% for Amazon in Assam is against the countrywide average of 140%.
Data available with the company show that Assam has a special fondness for smartphones as the wireless sub-category has witnessed nearly 190% growth in last one year. Television, cameras and other accessories have grown over 125% while laptops and tablets have seen a growth of nearly 20% in last one year.
Also, the company is of late witnessing a growth in number of sellers listing themselves with Amazon from Assam. Presently, 500 sellers from Assam are listed in the e-commerce site, selling goods ranging from traditional fabrics to household items to kitchen goods. The company has around one lakh sellers listed with it from across the country.
The state has also shown a “very healthy” demand for books with Guwahati city leading the demand in books. “The Northeast is a very important and fast growing market for us,” added Patel.
