Empee Sugars & Chemicals Ltd is in talks with international companies for its proposed re-entry into beer business.
M P Purushothaman, chairman and managing director, Empee Sugars & Chemicals, said that as a first step towards the re-entry, the company was setting up a distillery at Gummidipoondi, near Chennai. It would involve an investment of around Rs 100-110 crore through one of its group companies, Apollo Distilleries Pvt Ltd.
The capacity of the proposed unit will be five lakh cases per month, said Purushothaman.
“We are talking to international players for branding,” he said, refusing to comment further. In 2002, the company sold its brewing assets to UB group.
