Maruti Suzuki's former chief operating officer Mayank Pareek who managed the top auto maker's marketing and sales division has replaced Ranjit Yadav at Tata Motors to become its president of passenger vehicle business unit.

Pareek who resigned from Maruti by the middle of this month, will relocate to Mumbai and join the firm on October 1. Yadav will now head Tata Motors' international business of passenger and commercial vehicles, a statement from Tata Motors said today.

Negotiations between Pareek and Tata Motors had been going since the past few weeks. Tata Motors has been seeking an expert help especially in the sales and marketing department to turn around its fortunes ever since the death of its managing director Karl Slym in January this year.

"Mr. Pareek will also be a member of the Corporate Steering Committee. His extensive experience in the passenger car market will play a significant role in harnessing Tata Motors growth potential to help position the company as one of the leading passenger car manufacturers in India", added the statement.

Pareek, an alumni of Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore joined Maruti Suzuki in 1991. His departure from MSIL comes just week before the company prepares to re-enter the mid-size sedan market with the launch of the Ciaz, slated for launch on October 6.

At MSIL Pareek was responsible for domestic marketing and sales, dealer development, product development, used car business, outbound logistics, spare parts and accessories, after market services and international marketing and sales. He was also member of MSIL Management Committee, and a permanent invitee to the MSIL Board.

Pareek was majorly responsible to drive MSIL's ambitions in the non-metro markets especially the rural areas from where 40 per cent of the company's sales get generated.
