Eyeing 20% market share in Gujarat, Intex plans retail expansion

The mobile phone player already has over 8000 retail network in the state

With the Rs 4000-8000 range of smartphones seeing highest traction in Gujarat, Intex Technologies is looking to extend its market share to 20 per cent through expansion of its retail network.

"Gujarat is the most prominent and a vital state for us as we are selling more than 160,000 handsets and the state contributes around 10 per cent of national sale. As per GFK report, Intex has over 15 per cent market share in Gujarat and Intex is second brand in Gujarat in smart phone sale in volume. We are selling close to 60,000 smartphone per month in Gujarat. We are further strengthening ourselves and looking at 20 per cent market share," said Keshav Bansal, Director- Marketing, INTEX Technologies (I) Ltd.

According to Bansal, Gujarat is one of the most important state for Intex with customers in Gujarat being highly educated and seeking more feature rich phone. "There is more demand of high-end devices and smartphone acceptability and contribution in Gujarat is much higher than rest of the states," Bansal said.

The handset maker has one branch office each in Ahmedabad and Surat, apart from close to 25 direct distributors and over 50 micro distributors in Gujarat through which Intex is covering all tehsil and district.

The company is now looking to expand at taluka and village level.

Intex has also been expanding in terms of products range. "We have a lot of new innovative products in the making. We are bringing many devices with 2 GB memory and also with long battery life. This quarter will also see the launch of 4G device," said Bansal.

Nationally, Intex is growing at 100 per cent on annual basis. As per shipment report by Infodrive India & Cyber Exim Solutions, Intex Technologies led the smartphone sales in January and February 2015 with 650,000 device sales each month, the company claimed.

"Intex has been showing great promise by riding on the success it has received in the previous quarter Q4- Oct- Dec, 2014. Sales of smartphone devices for the last quarter stood at 1.7 million and Intex achieved a third position in smartphone sales as per recognized Industry reports like IDC, Counterpoint Research and CMR reports.

According to CMR's report of January, Intex has leaped further with a market share of 10 per cent in smartphones," Bansal added.
