Passengers travelling to Dubai and Singapore may soon board the plane at Visakhaptnam, which is being upgraded to an international airport.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is talking to Silk Air of Singapore and Air India on flight schedules among other things regarding launching of international services to these two destinations from Vizag, according to a senior government official.
“Immigration and customs wings have already been established at Vizag airport. Flight schedules are being currently worked out,” the official said, stating that Vizag may give stiff competition to Hyderabad airport on these two international routes. Based on the demand, more international routes are also expected to be added from Vizag in future.
It may be recalled that the state had earlier proposed an all new international airport at Vizag when YS Rajasekhrara Reddy was the chief minister. “As of now, the present facility is sufficient for existing passenger traffic. The new greenfield airport proposal is still a long way to go,” the official maintained.
