The need for proper management of coal and coke, which was important for blast furnances in steel-making industries was today emphasized by Tata Steel Managing Director, H M Nerurkar.
The focus was to reduce carbon dioxide emission in steel-making and sustain the coke cost for economic steel production, Nerurkar said inaugurating a two-day international conference on coal and coke, organized by the Indian Institute of Metals, Jamshedpur chapter and Tata Steel here.
Due to volatility of coal prices, he said, it was a challenge before stakeholders on how to maintain quality and address environmental aspects as well.
The past few years witnessed a wide fluctuation in price of the coal and the ever increasing appetite of the steel-makers to get control on coking coal has further fueled prices, he said.
Nerurkar said an increase in performance efficiencies guaranteed improved competitiveness not only among steel makers, but also in steel and other materials.
