US-car manufacturer Ford is planning to export cars to 48 countries from Tamil Nadu. The company which started its export of Figo model in July, said that by the end of this year, it would export 8,000 Figos to South Africa, its first export destination from Chennai.
Speaking to reporters at the concluding event of Ford Figo Discover Smart Drive campaign, Michael Boneham, president and managing director, Ford India, said that the company started exports of Figo to South Africa in July, and between April and October, the company exported 4,100 cars to South Africa and by December-end the figure will touch 8,000.
Nigel Wark, executive director (marketing, sales and service), Ford India, added that from October 30, the company started exporting Figo to Nepal, which will be second the international market to be catered by Maraimalai Nagar facility, on the outskirts of Chennai.
In addition to these two markets, the company was looking at 48 countries in 2011, said Boneham. These include North Africa, Mexico, South America, Arab Emirates and West Asia.
The celebration at Ford was on the occasion of Figo crossing the 50,000 mark, registering a sale of 52,644 units since its launch in India.
