The power availability in Orissa is expected to be augmented by 350-400 Mw by September, 2012 with four more thermal power stations having Independent Power Producer (IPP) status set to go on stream by this time.

"GMR Energy is going to commission its 1,400 MW coal-based power plant by September 2012. Both KVK Nilachal and Monnet Power are set to operationalize their 1,050 MW units by August 2012. This apart, Ind-Barath Energy Utkal Ltd will add a 660 MW unit by March next year. The state's share of power from these power generating units will be in the range of 12-14 per cent and together, these units would be providing us 350-400 MW of power,” said G Mathivathanan, secretary (energy).

It may be noted that the state had signed MoUs with 30 IPPs out of which the pact with Essar Power was not renewed. Among the MoU signed players, only Sterlite Energy had commissioned its 600 MW units at its 2,400 MW power plant at Burkhamunda near Jharsuguda. The state through its nodal agency for land acquisition, Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation of Orissa (Idco), has allotted 3787.72 acres to the MoU signed IPPs.

Monnet Ispat Power Company Limited is almost through with the land acquisition work for its 1,000 MW power project proposed to be set up at the Malibrahmani-Nisha-Chendipada stretch in Angul district on 993.42 acres of land.

Similarly, Jindal India Thermal Power Plant (JITPL) has acquired 95 per cent of the land needed for its project and constructed the boundary wall which is 98 per cent complete. JITPL had proposed to set up a 1,200 MW power plant at Derang near Talcher on 1,055 acres of land. The company has been alloted the Mandakini coal block with a reserve of 96.84 million tonnes of coal. The IPPs have already invested Rs 12375.09 crore on their proposed projects in the state.

Among the IPPs who have made significant investments are Sterlite Energy Ltd (Rs 7,400 cr) Ind Barath Energy (Utkal) Ltd (Rs 1,200 cr), GMR Kamalanga Energy Ltd (Rs 1,145.83 cr), Jindal India Thermal Power Ltd (Rs 641.58 cr), Lanco Babandh Power Ltd (Rs 873.12 cr) and Monnet Power Company Ltd (Rs 570 cr).
