GACL partners with German firm for HPPO project

State-owned Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited (GACL) has entered into an agreement with a Germany-based specialty chemicals maker, Evonik Industries for setting up a multi-million Hydrogen Peroxide and Propylene Oxide project at Dahej in Gujarat.

As per the terms of the memorandum of understanding, production facilities for Hydrogen peroxide and propylene oxide would be created by Evonik and GACL respectively.

This project would be based on an innovative, environment friendly HPPO technology and would be set up at Dahej, Gujarat and meets GACL objective of a green technology, an official statement said.

GACL intends to acquire license from Evonik and Uhde to use the environment-friendly HPPO (Hydrogen Peroxide to Propylene oxide) process which is jointly developed by Evonik, (Germany), and Uhde, Dortmund (Germany) to produce propylene oxide.

 

Under the MOU, Evonik would be constructing a new hydrogen peroxide production plant and GACL would be setting propylene oxide plant.

Traditionally, hydrogen peroxide is supplied to the paper and pulp industry. But here, Evonik will produce and supply the Hydrogen Peroxide for production of Propylene Oxide at an over-the-fence facility as it is one of the main raw materials, the statement informed.
